For the monster, see Claws.

Claws are a recurring type of weapon in the series and have appeared in practically every installment in the series since their introduction. They are favored by martial artists and other barehanded brawlers since conventional weapons do not suit them. Due to their somewhat primitive nature, claws are also wielded by characters who are closer to nature and even monster companions. Claws are also used by some monsters, such as Riptides, Jackal rippers and Clawses.

Some notable claws throughout the series are the Golden claws, the Cobra claws, and the Orichalcum claws.

A small subset of Claws are the Fangs type of weapons, like the Stone fangs; while originally designed to be equipped by monsters, when equipped by a human, these less refined-looking weapons act like Claws.

Another, less common, subset of Claws are the Gauntlets, which are identical to the Claws with the exception of lacking any type of blade attachment, being purely blunt weapons due to this.

An even rarer subset of Claws, are the Akillics; only ever used by Debora Briscoletti so far, they are sets of combat-made fake acrylic nails. Currently, there are only two types of Akillics.

Claws are also one of the few weapon types that are usually wielded in both hands by default due to the fact that they normally come in a set of pairs, the others being the Fans and the Twin swords. As such, they can normally be classified as two-handed weapons.

Appearances[]

Dragon Quest III[]

Claws are introduced in this game, being the preferred weapon type of Martial Artists. They are the only weapons they can use which do not impart a penalty to their attack power. In remake versions of the game, more Claws have been added and Thieves can also equip some of them, as well.

Dragon Quest IV[]

Alena can use all of the Claws in the game, as can Psaro in the remakes. Maya, oddly enough, is able to wield the Cobra claw.

Dragon Quest V[]

Claws could only be used by the various monster companions in the original SNES version of the game, especially Saber. In the DS version, Debora is also able to wield Claws, as well as Akillics, which can only be used by her. Fangs are distinct as they can only be wielded by monsters.

The Claws are:

  • Iron claw
  • Fire claw
  • Cobra claw

The Fangs are:

The Akillics are:

Dragon Quest VI[]

Carver and Amos have access to various Claws, as well as the Slime companions. Once again, Fangs are mostly limited to monster companions rather than human characters. Terry is also able to equip the Orichalcum fangs.

  • Iron claw
  • Fire claw
  • Cobra claw

Dragon Quest VII[]

Ruff is the only character in the game who can use Claws and Fangs, being a former White wolf cub himself.

Dragon Quest VIII[]

Claws only appear in the 3DS version of the game, being one of the weapon types that Morrie can equip. Interestingly, while usually Claws are wielded as a pair, one in each hand, in this title only one of such gauntlets is used, making it possible to equip a Shield in the other hand. As such, the name of each returning Claws, is slighty altered by making it singular instead of plural.

Dragon Quest IX[]

Claws can be used by the Martial Artist and Thief vocations. However, once a character has fully mastered the Claw skill, they can use Claws with any vocation.

Dragon Quest Heroes II[]

Like in the previous title, Dragon Quest Heroes, Alena can be equipped with a multitude of Claws; however, since this time around, both Carver and Ruff also join the group, the number of Claw weapons have been expanded and split into different subsets: for Carver, there are the Gauntlets, blade-less counterparts of the claws, for Ruff, the more primitive-looking Claws, while Alena has the majority of the classical Claw-type weapons and some of the Gauntlets.
