Zenithians are a recurring race in the Dragon Quest series. Specifically, they appeared in the "Zenithia trilogy," to which they indirectly lend their name.

Description[]

They live among the clouds, inside the legendary castle of Zenithia, alongside the Zenith Dragon, the guardian of the world, whom they faithfully serve.

Zenithians are quite insular and prefer to avoid contact with outsiders if they can help it. However, there have been instances of Zenithians falling out of the clouds or otherwise descending to earth. Zenithians have been known to associate with elves and keep dragons as pets. Being great scholars and in such close contact with the Zenith Dragon, Zenithians naturally understand a great deal about the world and its affairs, history, and cosmic mechanics.

Physically, Zenithians greatly resemble angels, each having a set of swan-like wings on their backs. It can also be gathered that they are fairly powerful magicians. They share many similarities to the Celestrians from Dragon Quest IX, such as being winged enlightened beings who reside above the clouds.

Appearances[]

Dragon Quest IV[]

The Hero is the son/daughter of a humble Human woodcutter, and a Zenithian woman who accidentally fell from the sky. Due to it being taboo for a human and a zenithian to love and marry each other, the woodcutter was struck down by a lightning bolt, while the mother was forced to return into the skies. The child, now effectively orphaned, was then raised by a couple of the reclusive Hidden Valley, with the villagers, aware of the great destiny awaiting them, swore to protect the child until the bitter end; meanwhile, the woodcutter was buried near the old hut of his own father.

Eventually, the party of the Chosen was able to travel to Zenithia via The Stairway to Zenithia after being invited by Orifiela, a somewhat ditzy Zenithian woman, whom the Chosen rescured after she had fallen on the branches of Yggdrasil, and hang out with the Zenithians there before moving on to Nadiria; before they departed, Orifiela allowed her pet dragon Sparkie to assist the group in their quest. While in Zenithia, a Zenithian woman could be met; due to the subtext of her dialogue, and the comments of the Chosen during Party Chat, it is heavily implied that this woman is the very same one who had married the human woodcutter, and thusly the Hero's biological mother, although she chose not to reveal her true connection with them.

While travelling through The Azimuth, the Chosen met with another Zenithan man who had fallen to the sky, who was nursed back to health by the locals.

Dragon Quest V[]

After the legendary zenithian hero pass away, the Order of Zugzwang were to send out and hunted down to kill and wiped out descendants of the original zenithian hero due to the fear that a new Legendary Hero could destroy Grandmaster Nimzo and his assets. Nevertheless, three female descendants, Bianca, Nera, and Debora, managed to slip past the Order's watch, and eventually one of them married the Hero, bearing two children, a boy and a girl, with their Zenithian descendancy active, with the boy in particular being able to don the legendary Zenithian Equipment. Together, the extended royal family of Gotha battled and eventually defeated the evil Nimzo and his forces.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince[]

Set in the same world as IV, it is revealed that, in the distant past, a female Zenithian, Azabel, went rogue; using a stolen Secret of Creation, she created three destructive monsters, Estark Izmah, Estark Venjah, and Estark Dumah, the latter of which was the complete name of Estark, Lord of the Underworld, to purge the world, which she saw as flawed, and recreate it devoid of any perceived "sin". The other Zenithians, led by the Zenith Dragon waged war against her, but in just a few days, half of the world had already been ravaged by flames. Azabel was banished by the Zenith Dragon in an ancient elven realm, while putting her foul creations to sleep underground by separating their souls from their bodies. However, he feared that, should they ever wake up, they would without question make way to her side, thusly freeing them; as such, the incident was recorded in the Zenithian scriptures, as to never be forgotten nor repeated again.

Due to Psaro defeating Whitewhorl the Watcher, the Abyssal dragon guardian of the imprisoned souls posted by the Zenith Dragon, Dumah's soul was reawakened by the ritual of the Affinity of the Trinity, the apocalyptic cult worshipping the Unholy trinity of destructive beings, with Dumah's body beginning to reawaken inside Mamon Mine. However, just like in the original events the body of Estark Dumah, was defeated by the Chosen before Psaro, accompanied by the loyal General Chayne, could reach him.

Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai[]

Only described as "the Spirits of the Heavens", the Zenithians have a very minor role in the story; while on the surface the hero Avan and his party was battling against Hadlar and his forces, the Dragon Knight Baran, was busy dealing with another menace that was threatening the peace of the world from the shadowy Underworld, Velzar, the King of the Abyss, the last intelligent dragon, capable of speech, and a powerful master of the dark powers.

While Baran was successful into defeating Velzar, his immortal soul would have eventually resurrected his broken body; to counter this, the Spirits of the Heavens descended upon him, and sealed Velzar into a stone monument. Still, while virtually incapable to do further harm to the surface, Velzar wanted to keep monitoring the situation in case he would ever be freed, so he sent his last servant, codenamed Killvearn, to monitor his old rival, the Dark King Vearn, the other ruler of the Underworld, who also had his own plans for the surface world.
