Elves are a recurring race in the Dragon Quest series, playing a substantial role particularly in Dragon Quest IV, and being a playable race in Dragon Quest X.

Dragon Quest IV[]

Elves play a substantial role in the story of IV, being the original impetus of the world-shaking events.

Originally, the village of Strathbaile was an elven settlement before Humans drove its original inhabitants away and took it for themselves, with the Elves being forced to relocate in a much more isolated and secure location, at the feet of the growing Yggdrasil tree, where they founded the village of El Forado.

In fact, the relationship between elves and humans is a very tense one, particularly because, very rarely, an elf individual may possess the ability to shed rubies as tears, attracting the unwanted attention of ruthless greedy thugs, and thusly putting the elves in near constant harm's way. To add salt to the wound, the effort is furthermore worthless, because the ruby tears are magical and full of the elf's most powerful desires; hence, since the elf most natural inner desire is to not bestow the tears to their aggressor, the rubies always end up shattering into nothingness if touched. Normally, elves do not see the need to have personal names, but they can occasionally decide to adopt one if they interact with other races, such as Zenithians.

In Chapter 2, Alena and her friends saw an elf named Oopsy and her sister Daisy at the top of Birdsong Tower, a place whose beautiful roof top garden used to be popular meeting spot for their kind. Though the scared pair left as soon as they saw the party, they fortunately mistakenly left behind a phial of Birdsong Nectar that is necessary to restore the voice of the Tzar of Zamoksva from its supernatural silence.

Later, in Chapter 5, the Chosen met Rose, an elf who in the past was hunted by humans because her tears transmutate into small rubies. She was saved from her aggressor by who would later become her lover, the demon Psaro, the story's main antagonist, whose resolve to crush humanity was only fortified after saving the lass. The Master of Monsterkind took her to his hometown of Rosehill, a dwarven settlement, even naming her after the village, and built a tower which true purpose is to protect his love, under the false premise of making fortification in case of war. Thanks to the efforts of Psaro, Rosehill gradually became a shelter for anyone fleeing from the machinations of greedy and malicious humans, although during his absence, some humans did take residence, and not all them had the best intentions in mind. Furthermore, before using the Secret of Evolution on his monster comrades or himself, Psaro experimented it on some animals, granting them enhanced thought, and then kindly giving them a home in Rosehill.

During their journey the Chosen were finally able travel to Yggdrasil, at the roots of which the elves have built their main city, El Forado. As Yggdrasil grows in a vast desert barricaded on all sides by colossal mountain ranges, the elves of El Forado are safe from the worst of humanity and do not shun the chosen ones. Oopsy, Daisy, and an unnamed third elf are also seen again in Zenithia's garden, and were otherwise, initially much more wary of the group.

After the Chosen defeated Estark at his tomb in Mamon Mine, one of Psaro's lieutenants tragically informed him that Rose had been kidnapped, claiming it was done by humans. Immediately fleeing to her aid, Psaro was however too late, and Rose's life was snuffed out. In reality, it was Psaro's second in command, Aamon, who had arranged for the girl's death: he desired for Psaro to give into blind rage and allow himself to become more easily manipulated and thus allowing Aamon to rule monsterkind from behind the figurative throne. With the loss of his love, Psaro gave into despair and utilized the Secret of Evolution on himself to become a hideous beast with enough power to crush all of humanity.

However, the Chosen were able to retrive the legendary bloom of the world tree, the Yggdrasil flower, and used it to revive Rose from the afterlife. Knowing of Aamon's machinations and Psaro's sad fate, Rose insisted to accompany the Chosen to Psaro's new lair in Nadiria. There, upon seeing her love warped, Rose shed tears full of her desire to return Psaro to normal, which proved strong enough to reverse the Secret of Evolution. Psaro, returned to sanity and made aware of Aamon's betrayal, then joined forces with the Chosen in order to put an end to the treacherous wannabe conqueror.

Following their victory, Psaro decided to peacefully give up his plan of wiping out humanity, and retired to quietly live alongside Rose.

Dragon Quest VIII[]

In the larger world, Elves are regarded as a very elusive race, being only rarely seen in out-of-hand and usually hidden settlements.

In the distant past, during the Lord of Darkness' first assault on the world, the great sage Kupas saved the lives of an elf and a Gigantes. The elf's name was Raya, and she and the gigantes pledged allegiance to Kupas in gratitude, becoming his inseparable traveling companions. As the lives of humans are brief compared to elves and monsters, the duo honored Kupas' dying wish by founding the village of Tryan Gully, where Elves, Humans, and peaceful monsters could co-exist together.

The hidden community was also dedicated to preserving the memory of the dark lord reign of terror, with several inhabitants having first-hand knowledge of those infernal times. Speaking to Raya herself is also important to advance the journey, as she bequeaths the Darktree Leaf to the party in order to track down the fiend before his resurrection can be completed.

Being the sole Elf the Hero and his party can meet and speak to, Raya is a strong departure from former elves, having neither the fearful suspicions of humans as past elves nor childlike mischievousness of the Faeries. She has great respect for the seven legendary sages, being awed by their courage in standing up to a world-ending threat, and this as given her a positive outlook on humanity in general. Being the leader of her hidden hamlet, she welcomes the party warmly.

Dragon Quest X[]

Elf is a race that can be chosen for the player's character in Dragon Quest X. Prior to version 3.2 of the game, elves boasted the highest magical mending and second highest magical might development of the playable races as well as a 20% resistance to all wind-based skills and spells.

In this title, the Elves sports a most noticeable diverse appearance compared to their more human-like looks in the previous titles, having not only their classic pointed ears and pinkish skintones, but also being on average, slightly shorter than the average human but not as much as a Dwarf or a Poppet would, with only few individuals beinf as tall as humans; furthermore, they sport a pair of seemingly detached insect-like wings on their backs, giving them overall a more Faerie-like look. However, because the wings have no observable connection with their backs, the clothes of the Elves don't need any kind of race-specific adjustments, unlike others such as the Wetlings or the Ogres. While the wings allows the elves to lighty float above the ground at best, they are not suited for true flight, leaving the elves mostly groundbound.

After starting out as a human, the Hero may become this race or any of the other seven races, including Ogre, DwarfPoppet, or Wetling.

In the world of Astoltia, the Elf race, created in ancient times by the patron deity Eldona in her image, is native to the continent of Eltona, a land of bountiful winds. In the past, the divine beast Amakamushika protected the Elves, before being sealed away along most other divine beasts in the land of Nagaland. The sacred tree Yggdrasil, another creation of Eldona, can also be found on Eltona, and its guardian, the Leaf spirit, has been on amicable terms with the Elves for ages.

Trivia[]

  • Until the release of Dragon Quest X, all elves were shown to be female.
    • Contrary to popular belief, Ishmahri is not an elf--he is a spirit of the dreamlands.
DQ Walk - Elf

Eliza as she appears in Dragon Quest Walk

  • Though never outright stated anywhere to be an Elf herself, Eliza's heritage has been speculated by fans for quite some time, due to her being portraited having pointed ears in her sprites and in some artworks. If her elven heritage was to be true, it would mean that the Hero and Psaro are mirror images of one another, as both were close to an elf that met a tragic demise, spurring the formers' subsequent actions.
  • The stock art of the male elf in X greatly resembles the Eastern Kaioshin of Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga, with only the clothing and hair being different.
  • In earlier translations of earlier games, the Faerie and Elf races would often end up being mislabeled between one another, one such example being in Dragon Quest III, where the Faeries were initially being refered as Elves; later it was corrected in subsequent re-releases.
  • During the first cutscene of Dragon Quest Heroes, its possible to see the prizes of the shooting gallery; these prizes include stuffed doll versions of the 5 non-Human races of Dragon Quest X: the Poppets, the Ogres, the Wetlings, and the Dragon Quest X versions of the Dwarf and Elf races, both of which do appear in Heroes under a different guise.
