A nail blighter is a monster who appears in the Dragon Quest series.

Characteristics[]

Nail blighters resemble lizard-men found in various works of fantasy fiction, and so are covered head to foot in scales. They also have a number of bony plates from the crown of the head to the mid-back, not unlike a stegosaur. Their defining features, however, are their long, blade-like claws: three on each foot, and four on each hand.

They attack fiercely despite a lack of specific skills, and often appear in mobs. These characteristics alone make nail blighters extremely dangerous.

Etymology[]

Its name is a pun on "nail biter" (an extremely nervous person or scary situation) in reference to its long, sharp claws, adding the British term "blighter" that usually refers to a detestable sort, an unfortunate soul or other hard-luck case, when said of a person.

Its former name may have been a pun on "mailman", a person who delivers and picks up mail, and also references the beast's prominent nails.
