The Hero of Dragon Quest XI is a young man from the village of Cobblestone. He is the reincarnation of the ancient hero who once saved the world of Erdrea. On his sixteenth birthday, he sets out on his journey in order to fulfil his destiny, which is fighting alongside his trusted friends against the cruel Mordegon and Calasmos.

Appearance[]

The present Luminary is a young man with blue eyes and brown chin-length hair in a bob cut. On his left hand, he bears a mysterious mark that has appeared since the day he was born. The mark glows when the hero is in danger. He wears a long, sleeveless brown and purple leather tunic over a black long-sleeved shirt, brown trousers, and tan leather boots. Around his waist, he wears a leather belt with a small bag attached and he carries a scabbard across his back.

Personality[]

While some of his personality is determined by the player's choices as is traditional in Dragon Quest games, the Luminary departs from the bold, forthright heroes of ages past. As the perceived chosen of Yggdrasil, many revere him and have gone to great lengths to see to his care until the appointed time. As such, this young man has lived a very sheltered existence, and is mostly unaware of what lies in store for him. In flashbacks, he is very much a typical boy but sometime has a mischievous streak is also acknowledged like pranks, though unsure of his place in the world and how to deal with life. Also, unlike heroes of the past, he is easily manipulated by his own fears and insecurities. Yet throughout his journey, he will grow into the hero that the world knows him to be. While he is not keen to openly show it, the Luminary has been deeply affected by the hardships and tragedies he encountered in his journey, many of which its implied he came to blame himself for them as he considers his inability to stop The Lord of Shadows in obtaining Yggdrasil's power, which resulted in Erdrea's destruction and the death of countless people including one of his companions, his greatest failure. He is so ashamed of it, that when offered the chance to prevent it from ever happening, he uncompromisingly decides to go for it no matter the risks, even stubbornly refusing to listen to the pleas of his companions to let it go.

Biography[]

Dragon Quest XI[]

The Luminary was born into a great destiny, said to be the reincarnation of a great hero who saved the world in the past. He was born on the same day as Gemma, a girl from the village of Cobblestone who becomes his childhood friend. On their birthday when they reach adulthood, the two celebrate together before the young man sets out on his journey to fulfil his destiny. He comes into conflict with the Kingdom of Heliodor, whose king, Carnelian, does not believe his claims and declares him to be the Darkspawn.

Strategy[]

The Hero has a somewhat standard, but ever useful, range of equipment, being able wield one-handed swords, greatswords, as well as shields, including the bulkier and less common Greatshields; thanks to the skill Dual Wielding, the Hero can eventually decide to forgo his shield options, and wield two at the same time of his one-handed weapons.

Trivia[]

  • The Luminary is the first protagonist to not be referred to as Yuusha (勇者) in promotional material nor the game itself. Instead, the title of Shujinkō (主人公) is used, which means protagonist in Japanese.
  • This Hero has some similarities with some of the heroes from previous games:
    • He comes from a lineage of previous heroes, much like the original Hero and the Prince of Midenhall.
    • He sets out on his journey on his 16th birthday, similar to the Hero of Dragon Quest III. He is also seen wielding Erdrick's sword in the opening video. After the Dark One's Defeat is renamed Erdrick (Loto) by the Yggdragon.
    • He was born with a mysterious mark on his left hand, much like the Hero of Dragon Quest VII. It is said to bestow him with mysterious powers and glows in times of danger.
    • His inability to advance past the second tier of explosive spells is a reference to the Hero of Dragon Quest III and the Hero of Dragon Quest IV, who are also only able to learn up to Boom.
    • His family connections make him similar to both the Hero of Dragon Quest III and the Hero of Dragon Quest VIII, as well. The Luminary finds out that his father, Irwin, was a great warrior himself much like Ortega. He is also secretly a prince from the kingdom of Dundrasil as revealed by Rab, his maternal grandfather, much like the DQ8 Hero finding out about his royal lineage from his grandfather, Chen Mui.
  • In the international version of the game, there is a special costume that allows him to dress up like the Hero from Dragon Quest VIII. The outfit was added for the S: definitive edition version of the game in all regions.
  • He is the first hero in the main series to have a voice actor in the English version of the games. English actor Rasmus Hardiker provides his vocal grunts in various scenes and in battle.
  • The Luminary has the same hairstyle as Android 17 of Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball series, as well as a similar physique.
  • The Luminary and his companions each represent one of the classes in Dragon Quest III. The Luminary represents the Hero.
