Humans are a recurring race throughout the Dragon Quest series, appearing in almost every Dragon Quest game, manga, novel, or animated adaptation. This should not be confused with Humanoid monsters.

In almost every instance, the main hero of any particular adventure is human or at least partially human, and in many cases the entire party is composed of humans.

The party is exclusively human in the original Dragon Quest, Dragon Quest II, Dragon Quest III. Some of the games suggest that Erdrick and his descendants are somehow more than Human, but it's never specified exactly what makes them capable of performing feats other Humans cannot.

In the mainline games, the only non-human heroes are the Hero from Dragon Quest IV, who is half-Zenithian, the Hero from Dragon Quest VIII, who is half-Dragovian and the Hero from Dragon Quest IX who is a Celestrian. The Hero of Dragon Quest X is originally a human, but after being resurrected they can choose to become a member of the other races, and never return to being human.

In The Adventure of Dai original story and adaptations, while the legendary hero Avan, and most of his Disciples of Avan are all human, the titular Dai is product between the love of a human mother and a Dragon Knight.

While the human race is usually seen as the victims of the story, being endangered by evil Monsters who have neither pity nor compassion towards their suffering, with otherwise peaceful relation with other races, that is not always the case; sometimes, the darker aspects of the humans are shown in full view, such as greed, lust for power, corruption, discrimination towards the different, and so on, illustrating that, while generally speaking, the human race as a whole is good, their society is also flawed, and there are many truly rotten characters that are free to run around. Sometimes, characters of other races, like Psaro, Corvus, Baran or Larhart ended up, either directly or their loved ones, being treated so badly by groups of humans, that they completely turn misanthropic, only changing their mind after meeting the best of what the human race can offer.

Possibly due to this darker side, many monsters species have human origins, having been created by them with magic or machines, born due to lingering grudges or tragic deaths, transformed by some magical spell, and so, with even some truly evil monsters, such as Balzack, Nimzo, the Gittish Empire, Fractos, or Mordegon, having been originally human before of their utter corruption. However, more rarely, some monsters are seen actively seeking to return or become human, sometimes achieving it after many difficulties.
