Kenshin Dragon Quest: Yomigaerishi Densetsu no Ken (剣神ドラゴンクエスト甦りし伝説の剣 Sword God Dragon Quest: The Legendary Sword Reborn) is a plug-and-play television game developed by Armor Project and SSD Co.

It is a loose adaptation of the original Dragon Quest played with a motion-controlled sword peripheral.

Gameplay[]

The player has a toy sword to use as their game controller to control the character's movement, fight off enemies, block with their shield, cast spells and for navigating other parts of the system. You can only move along one set path in the game with few exceptions of side paths.

The player can slash the toy sword horizontally, vertically or diagonally causing different effects and damage to enemies depending on the direction they slash. As the player builds up successful attacks and blocks with their shield, they build up a super meter. When this is completed, the Hero can then unleash a powerful attack.

The game's ROM is located on an item that resembles a shield. To save the game the player must use a memory card that resembles book and insert into the shield.

Enemy encounters are set at predetermined locations and are encountered in similar fashion to other Dragon Quest titles. There are also bosses that are encountered at the end of each chapter in the game.

Plot[]

Characters[]

  • Hero: the protagonist, and a descendent of the legendary hero Erdrick. This is the only character the player controls throughout the game by using the sword.
  • Princess Gwaelin: the princess of Alefgard. She has been kidnapped by the Dragonlord and is being kept by a dragon in the Marshy Cave.
  • Dragonlord: the main antagonist and final boss.
  • Medal King: a shopkeeper that exchanges goods for mini medals found throughout the game.
  • Zoma: A secret boss fought in his own stage after beating the game and fulfilling a set of requirements.

Story[]

Kenshin Dragon Quest: Yomigaerishi Densetsu no Ken takes place in the world of Alefgard, the same world as the first Dragon Quest. The quest explores areas similar to the main storyline from Dragon Quest. The main quest goals are saving Princess Laura and defeating the evil King Dragon, all while using Erdrick's sword.

The quest is broken into eight chapters that take you throughout all of the locations in Alefgard, many being the same as in Dragon Quest. Eventually, the hero will put together the same rainbow bridge as in Dragon Quest, before he makes his way into the final castle, where he faces off against the King Dragon. The game includes a few mini-games, including a Slime Crisis game that would later be seen in Dragon Quest Swords.

Reception[]

Over 300,000 pre-orders of Kenshin Dragon Quest: Yomigaerishi Densetsu no Ken were made prior to the game's release in Japan. By August 6, 2004, more than half a million units of the game were sold in Japan. The game was presented with a Special Award at the 8th Annual CESA Game Awards in 2004.

Kenshin's spiritual sequel is Dragon Quest Swords for the Wii console, which uses the Wii Remote as a control instead of a plug-in sword. The game's technology was also adopted for two other video games, Tiger Electronics' The Lord of the Rings: Warrior of Middle Earth in 2003 and Star Wars Saga Edition Lightsaber Battle Game.
